with Wick Watering
Capillary Action
Our botanical department at the Embroiled News has been experimenting with several homemade self-watering containers to be used to grow a variety of vegetables delicacies or flowers. This process its also know as wick watering or watering by capillary action from below the planter's soil serfice. This term should also not be confused with a 'self watering proces' since the user must supply and regulate the water intake of the plants as needed.Vegetables

This novel idea when using the wick/soil retainer planters is that the plants receivese regulated amount of water and nurishments thus inducing a steady rapid grouth that would not be possible if groun in soil garden plots. All that is necessary is a minimal amount of water with nutrients at the bottom of the sealed self contained planter and the potting mix will provide by itself the wicking by capillary action.
The following 'Schematic Sketch and step by step pictures' will give you the basic consept for fabricating a wick watering planter. You will need to decide the size, then follow our easy steps. If you need further instructions, do email your questions to the Embroiled News Central Office.
When a water tight seal is needed use a silicone product to plug any small holes, cracks and drain pipe fittings. Weeds are esily removed during their first week of grouth, thereafter the container will remain weed free.
Position your planter where the bright light or partial shade will be most beneficial to the type of plants you are growing. During a big rain storm or rainy season its advised to remove the drain cap for proper drainage.
Once you have created the planter as instructed there is minimal work to maintain it. However, you must maintain a proper water level and nutrition as needed. Then within a few days you will be amazed to see how fast your plants will grow each day.
Choose the container size to the space available. Even one container on a small terrace or balcony will give you a splendid harvest and hours of fun.
We hope these pictures and instructions have inspired some of our readers to get motivated and put their green thumb, to good use. Do some additional research in identifying the type of plants that will grow in your area of the world and season.
